History

It was built between 1906 – 1917 for the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland, a lady with a rather colourful history who was imprisoned for six weeks in Holloway Prison for contempt of court and burning documents relating to the Duke’s will …

Carbisdale Castle is a stately home located in the Highlands region of Scotland, near the towns of Dornoch and Ardgay and is considered one of the Scottish Highland’s most iconic castles.

Providing a world-class residence, Carbisdale Castle is the residential home and estate of Lady Samantha Kane of Carbisdale, who purchased the Castle after falling in love with the Highlands. The rich history of the Castle, with the amazing story of its original builder, the Duchess of Sutherland, and its service as the royal home of the King of Norway during the Second World War, inspired Samantha to embark on major renovation and conservation of the Castle, its grounds and loch, and to restore it to its original magnificence and splendour, for present and future generations.

Lady Samantha Kane of Carbisdale combined all the decorative features and grandeur of the Duchess of Sutherland’s original creation with services, systems, fixtures, fittings and layout of the highest contemporary quality, together with reorganisation of the existing accommodation to suit 21st century living and the development of a spa and swimming pool, therapy-treatment rooms and gym, as complementary features to the 64 rooms, 42,000 square feet, of gross internal accommodation.

Lady Carbisdale, like many other owners of great houses and historic buildings, wishes to share the magical experience of her great house part of the year, to help with the extremely high maintenance costs of the Castle. Groups of no more than 12 – 16 guests can hire the Duchess Wing of the Castle for a long-weekend or week at the time.

Guests will be able to live like Lords and Ladies, in a former royal palace, complete with butler service, top chefs, and its own fine whisky and wine. The Castle’s guests can enjoy world-class fishing at the Castle’s private loch, shooting at the nearby range, tennis at its own courts, and golfing at the nearby world-famous Dornoch Golf Club, or simply imbibe the spectacular views of its verdant wooded environs at a slow pace from any of the Castle’s three-hundred-and-sixty-five windows.
